
The Older Persons Act of 2006 (Act No. 13 of 2006) in South Africa protects the rights, well-being, and safety of older people. The act also aims to prevent abuse of older people.
What it covers

The act criminalizes all forms of abuse, including physical, sexual, psychological, and economic abuse

The act regulates how services are provided to older people, including the registration and management of residential facilities
• Care
The act aims to ensure that older people can remain in their homes for as long as possible
Who it applies to
• A man who is 65 years of age or older
• A woman who is 60 years of age or older
WHAT ARE THE RIGHTS OF OLDER PERSONS IN TERMS OF THE OLDER PERSONS ACT? THE ACT GIVES THE OLDER PERSONS THE RIGHT TO:
• Participate in community life in any position appropriate to his or her interest and capabilities;
• Participate in inter-generational programmes;
• Establish and participate in structures and associations for older persons;
• Participate in activities that enhance his or her income-generating capacity;
• Live in an environment catering for his or her changing capacities; and
• Access opportunities that promote his or her optimal level of social, physical, mental and emotional well being.
